Market & calculation guide

Know the price.
Understand the number.

Reference prices, recorded cash and your own assumptions answer different questions. The app keeps those distinctions visible.

Spot is a reference, not a dealer offer

The app uses Gold API for gold, silver, platinum and palladium reference prices in U.S. dollars per fine troy ounce. Quotes can differ from another provider or broker because their underlying sources, timing and pricing conventions differ.

A recent successful fetch means a response was received. It does not prove that a new market trade occurred or that every market is open. Check the displayed source, timestamp and status. Physical buying and selling prices can include premiums, discounts, spreads and fees.

Daily averages and collected observations

Daily history uses available historical daily price data. Recent intraday history is collected by a shared server process; collection does not require you to remain signed in or leave the page open. The current collector is scheduled once per minute, with interruptions and provider availability still possible.

Short windows may contain collected observations alongside daily history when finer data is unavailable. A daily average is not a closing price, and it cannot reproduce every movement during the day. Missing intervals are not filled with invented prices.

Older minute-level history is not available on the service’s current free Gold API history access. Intraday coverage grows as genuine observations are collected. The shared store retains a rolling 30-day intraday window.

Three valuations, three sets of assumptions

Melt value = fine troy ounces × selected spot price

Resale and quick-sale estimates apply your recorded lot adjustments to melt value. A zero adjustment does not assume a dealer premium. Portfolio valuation displays exclude selling fees; the scenario and deal tools can include the fees you explicitly enter.

Value minus cash paid = selected value − recorded cash paid

Value minus cash paid includes gift value when a gift is present. Paid-holdings return excludes gifts and zero-paid lots. The displayed record of cash paid is not a determination of tax basis.

Bitcoin quotes, candles and recorded cost

Bitcoin uses Coinbase Exchange BTC/USD latest-trade quotes and available completed candles. This is one exchange’s price, not a consolidated price or a guaranteed execution price. The available ranges run from one hour through long-term Coinbase history. Missing intervals stay visible; a recent request does not make an old provider observation fresh.

Bitcoin quantities are recorded in satoshis, with 100,000,000 satoshis per BTC, separately from fine ounces. Purchase fees enter recorded cost once. A partial sale allocates cost from the purchase you select; selling fees reduce recorded proceeds. These manual calculations are not tax-basis advice, trading or custody.

The All assets summary combines current USD metal and Bitcoin values while keeping their quantities separate. Metal resale adjustments do not change the Bitcoin reference quote. Bitcoin purchases and sales sync through a separate account ledger; goals and checkpoints remain device-local; see Bitcoin storage and backups.

Read the cost denominator

A cost per ounce needs both a numerator and a denominator. Dividing paid-holdings cost by paid ounces answers a different question from dividing all recorded cash paid by every ounce held, including gifts.

Use the label and formula attached to the metric. A gift can add metal value without adding cash paid; it should not silently change the meaning of a paid-holdings return.

Reconstructed portfolio history

The portfolio-history view covers metals only. It reconstructs held fine ounces from recorded purchases and sales, then applies the available historical metal prices. Later edits to a holding can change earlier reconstructed values. Deleted holdings and deleted or reversed sales are excluded.

The chart excludes realized sale proceeds, dealer premiums, resale adjustments, selling costs and inflation. Its movement includes purchases and sales, so it is not an investment performance return. The Bitcoin Market chart shows market-price history, not the past value of your wallet; the All assets summary combines current values only.

Scenarios and alerts

Scenarios and the deal checker use your chosen prices, quantities, purchase premiums and selling assumptions. They are hypothetical calculations, not forecasts. Changing a scenario does not enter a transaction in your ledger.

Goals and alerts help you keep track of your own targets. Alerts are evaluated while the app is open; no background notification delivery is promised.
